Background
In 1697, Spain ceded to the French the western third of the island of Hispaniola, which later became Haiti. The French colony, based on forestry and sugar-related industries, became one of the wealthiest in the Caribbean. Currently the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti continues to experience bouts of political instability and is its least literate country.

The land remains vulnerable to damage from frequent natural disasters, exacerbated by the country’s widespread deforestation.
There is extreme poverty; enormous income inequalities; destabilization due to recent presidential assassination; US preferential market access; deteriorating human capital and infrastructure investments. Real GDP per capita $2,800 (2020 est.)

Additionally, Secondary and Tertiary Education Information details are provided; https://idea.usaid.gov/cd/haiti/education, November 2022.
Note: Due to political unrest, violence, Covid, and then Cholera for the past 3 years, many schools have not opened at all or opened late; this is especially the case in the capital, Port-au-Prince, due to extreme violence. In the Grand Sud, a powerful earthquake on August 14, 2021, followed in 2 days by a Tropical Storm destroyed numerous schools, churches, and homes leaving few viable classroom sites.
